Vasco Da Gama Peri Peri was born from memory — but built for scale.
The journey began with Wayne’s childhood in Nelspruit, where peri-peri-soaked slap chips from a Portuguese café left a lasting impression. The flavour was bold, authentic, and unforgettable — rooted in Portuguese heritage and influenced by the spice routes of East Africa.
Years later, during lockdown, that memory reignited a mission: recreate the real thing. What started as passionate experimentation evolved into a refined formulation — a balanced blend of paprika, garlic, ginger, black pepper and chilli that honoured tradition while meeting modern production standards.
The response was immediate. Demand grew beyond friends and family. Then beyond small batches.
Today, Vasco Da Gama Peri Peri operates at industrial scale — producing massive weekly volumes of sauces, 5L foodservice formats, and batch-pack marinades supplied to butcheries, delis, restaurants and private label partners.
We purchase ingredients in bulk. We manufacture in high capacity runs. We supply at serious volume.
But the flavour remains unchanged.
Our commitment is simple:
Preserve authentic Portuguese–African flavour heritage • Manufacture with consistency and technical precision • Deliver product that performs in high-turnover environments
From nostalgic beginnings to scaled production, Vasco Da Gama Peri Peri has grown into a brand built for both heritage and high demand.
We are no longer just recreating a memory.
We are producing it — at volume.

Vasco Da Gama, a renowned explorer from Portugal, embarked on a historic voyage from Europe to India through the Cape of Good Hope from 1497 to 1499.
This groundbreaking expedition established the first ocean route connecting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, bridging the gap between the West and the Orient. Considered a pivotal moment in world history, Da Gama's discovery paved the way for global multiculturalism and ushered in an era of extensive colonial empires for the Portuguese, spanning from Africa to Asia.
Our delectable peri peri spices and sauces pay tribute to the legendary Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama, and his remarkable voyages from Portugal to India via the Cape of Good Hope. We owe a debt of gratitude to his heroic expeditions, as they established a vital trade route that introduced a variety of spices, including cinnamon, pepper, and other flavors previously unknown outside of Asia.
Some of these precious spices became the essence of every exceptional peri peri seasoning. Without Vasco's daring travels to India, the tantalizing kick that defines peri peri dishes wouldn't be possible. Our taste buds are forever grateful for his culinary contributions!

At Vasco Da Gama Peri Peri, we don’t just make sauces – we grow the heart of our flavour. On our very own farm in Limpopo, we plant over 18,000 chilli trees every season, while keeping half of the previous season’s crop for even bigger, richer harvests. This hands-on approach ensures that only the freshest, most vibrant chillies make it into our sauces.
But it’s about more than just farming. By running our own operations and working closely with local communities, we create employment opportunities, transfer valuable farming skills, and contribute directly to a stronger, more sustainable local economy.
Every bottle of Vasco Da Gama Peri Peri carries the story of our farm, our people, and our passion. When you taste our sauces, you’re tasting the fruits of thousands of chilli trees, proudly grown in South African soil.
